This is a text I received while walking Suki this morning:-
"I'm lying here trying to think what the golden compass was about. It was a girl.. with a compass.. who saves a polar bear from alcoholism..breaks a bridge that rebuilds itself, and has a ferret that can turn into a cat. And not forgetting the witches that are all obvious lesbians cus they just go round looking for fights. Oh theres a bunch og gypos too which also just look for fights... Hmm.. xx

I know.. and she can see who married who and who loves you and why a polar bear is an alcoholic just by looking at random pictures of lightning bolts and birds.. She should take herself onto crypton factor and put her skills to good use... personally, Id have let her fall off the bridge.. :S

It's an 'alethiometer' Which is latin meaning 'truth meter'. I have read the book and I must admit I found it a very interesting read. The girl, Lyra, set's out on a quest to save the other children.
Basically, all the people have what the author calls daemons. They are a spirit magically connected to the person and when the person is a cdhild, their daemon can change form into many different animals or insects. When they are of hthe other end of puberty, their daemon takes on definite shape for the rest of it's life. Mrs Coulter is trying to slice the childrens daemon's away from them. Ohand she has to find out that Lord Asriel is her father, and then come to terms with Mrs Coulter being her mother.
It's all very complicated, but do remember, it's supposed to be a childrens book. I found it interesting, and because I have read the book prior to seeing the film, I think I will understand what is going on.
Try reading the book Adie. I know it is difficult to read at first, but once you've finished the first chapter, it get's a lot easier from there, believe me.

Well let me tell you.. I dont think there will be a lot of kids out there that would understand it! Lol! I also think you shouldnt have to read a book before you watch a film if they actually do a good job of producing the film in the first place! It was all very pretty for the kids but apart from that it was just a pile of rubbish..Dunno, just our opinion. go see it and let me know what u think because it may be alot better if you have read the book! 
Maybe we just int intellectical poo... We should stick to enchanted! lol... From the trailer for the compass film, it looked quite good and i did wanna see it, but i was completely let down by it.. Good action bits, but there was just no story.. Roll on December 14th and enchanted!!

lol. I don't think it has anything to do with being intellectual. Even stupid people read books! I mean look at Vicky Beckham!!!
Anyway, I think it just depends on your style and your interests. You can't get in to enjoying a film if your not interested in the storyline. I value your opinion, but I will make my own mind up when I go to see it this weekend.
I'll let you know if I wasted my money or not! ;P

I love reading and Im going to make sure that at some point i read the book.. like I say, I can kinda see where the film was trying to go but whatever it did, it seemed to do it badly for me and the two guys I was with (and a few other in the cinema it seemed!) I probably would have enjoyed it more if Id have read the book because I could have filled in the missing details. I just think saying that you need to read a book to enjoy the film means that the film couldnt have been written that well to start with.. Lord of the rings was a huge film (and book) but the film was as enjoyable as the novel.., (so Im assured...) ;-)
Anyway, let us know if you enjoy the film and maybe u can fill in the blanks for us...
by the way, is it described as a.. thingymabobby in the book rather than a compass!? How the hell is a kid meant to grip hold of that?!

Hmm not sure what film you're on about but i dislike cinemas and todays movies anyway, bring out a pretty woman 2 with better sex scenes involving Julia Roberts PHWOAR! Also Jase, lesbians looking for fights? How rude, i dont look for fights and i'm a lemon

I saw it! I finally saw The Golden Compass! You were sort of right about it but I do think you and Jasey exxagerated it's lamenessa bit too much.
I liked the daemons, they were great. I liked the university, that place is so beautiful.
I think it lacked some ofthe most vital scenes which where in the book. They cut the final scene completely where Lyra and Roger find Lord Asriels laboratory in the North and where they find out that Coulter and Asriel are lovers again. And where Coulter and Asriel go over the bridge together.
Hmmmm.
